The first step would be to start the patent process for your idea under your own name or company and then contact BlackBerry. Without doing this you will have little or no protection if someone else comes up with the same idea or steals it.
You can also do your own patent search to see if it is unique.

Solid advice from BBSJdev. If your idea/invention is as potentially ground breaking as you believe it is then you should definitely submit it to your local patent office. I'm assuming you've already done the relevant research with regards your 'thingy-ma-bob'. Is it a totally new concept or an update/improvement on any existing 'thiny-ma-bob'?
The patent process is neither free or quick. So expect to pay, and to wait. But once submitted your 'thiny-ma-bob' will have "provisional" protection (patent pending status) which will prevent anyone else from submitting the same idea whilst extensive checks are made regarding your application.
Good luck.... (I'll accept 20% if it comes off btw)
