I would like to know if background applications are possible in playbook or not? I need that my application should be running, even if UI is not there.

Not as far as I know. Even in showcase mode, if a user closes the UI, the app quits.

I'm not sure what you are trying to do but you might be able to do it with the rim:background element, more details  http://glpr.ca/zrB58K

It allows you to have a background page start when the device starts. Either by itself or along with a launchable app
