Confusd. You say OS 5,6,7, but when I check my playbook it says 2.0.1.668.

Hi, You need to distinguish between BlackBerry OS 5+ (5, 6, 7) for Smartphones, BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0.x and upcoming BlackBerry 10 (as of I know without the OS, isn't it? only short BB10!?). You are right, PlayBook is 2.0.1.668, for me too.

My contact tells me that, as you suggest, the lag between picking up a sat and reporting it can be ages
I'm waiting for clarification - he works w/e so I expect results sooner rather than later
In the inbetween I'll put proximiti into high accuracy and try some other things I have in mind
Even though my accuracy was +/- 140m proximiti actually put me withing about 20m of my acual location (in a pub with now sky)
I guess that the thing to do is cache readings so that when I walk into the pub it has me really close then looses me but remembers where I just was
The lag between picking up a sat and reporting it for me sometimes takes up to 5min and more on PB, depending on how long it wasn't used. On BB10 it is way faster and showing also if I'm in the office without the sky above me, what is kind of strange, isn't it?
The accuracy will come down, for me it is starting @~120m on PB and after some "minutes" it is sometimes down @~2m.
You are really right, the caching of latest position, if available, is a really good idea when working on an app with geolocation!!

Thanks for clarifying. I am using a Playbook, so I guess my question about using geolocation with no internet connection applies to the Playbook in this case.
Will HTML5 geolocation work without internet and just tap into the devices GPS chip?

Two messages in one...
1) The OS on a BB5 / 6 / 7 is down to what your provider gives you. On Playbook you can always get the latest. DevAlpha runs PBOS but is a little more advanced than PB2
2) I note the timing LBP mentions. The solution would appear to be to periodically record the accurates and use these numbers for better location
I'll have to try (2) out but I'm certain that Apple / Droid don't use any more accurate data than can be gleaned from GPS
Just guessing here - I reckon they use A-GPS as well

This is as I suspected
Thanks for the confirmation
I always wondered why my iPad knew where I was
As suggested earlier it appears to be a mix of both live and A-GPS metrics

Somewhere here in the forum was another post about timings of events compared on all the mobile platforms I thought and at this time it seems BB10 isn't that good but we are far from a beta I think, so this is ok for now. Hopefully they got it fix for timings of events (also the bad timings of GPS and missing handling of options at this time!!) in the next BB10 update.
