How do I start developing a widget?

Hey, I have installed this eclipse 3.6 program and downloaded a bunch of things, a Blackberry Widget SDK and also this Blackberry web Development build... I have no idea how to get everything in the right spot so that I can start actually developing a widget.

My question isnt really 'how can i make a widget' its more how do I set up eclipse (or whatever) so that I can even start!

Re: How do I start developing a widget?

Basically when you downloaded the Widget SDK (Eclipse that includes already the tools) and an Emulator you can already start :smileywink: I would recommend you to look some videos for the beginning. It helped me a lot to get thinks started.

Re: How do I start developing a widget?

I have something called Blackberry Widget Packager installed, just not sure how to run it... there is a bbwp.exe and FledgeHook.exe in my Program Files but neither seem to want to run. Is that what I should be using?

Thanks for the help!

Hi ryanhc,

The widget SDK is the command line tool to compile widgets.

To get the SDK installed into Eclipse, you can follow the steps outlined here:

http://na.blackberry.com/eng/developers/browserdev/eclipseupdate.jsp

Once it's installed into Eclipse, there's a video here:

http://www.blackberry.com/DevMediaLibrary/view.do?name=widgetBlackBerrywebdevelopmentplug-inEclipse

which walks you through the steps to create a Widget in Eclipse.

If you'd like to use the command line tool, here's a video which walks through how to do it (the video uses Visual Studio as the IDE, but the steps are the same for compiling widgets).

http://www.blackberry.com/DevMediaLibrary/view.do?name=BlackBerrywidgetpackager

The other option would be to download Eclipse with the Web Plug-in already installed from here:

http://na.blackberry.com/eng/developers/browserdev/eclipseplugin.jsp

And then follow the steps in the first video above.

Hope this helps!

Prosanta
