Triggering soft keyboard programatically on the Torch

Is there a way to trigger the soft keyboard to appear on the Torch? We're applying focus to an input text field:

document.getElementById('theField').focus()

That does apply focus to the field in that the cursor is in the field, but the keyboard doesn't appear until the person taps the field itself.

Is that just the way the device works, or is there a different JS event that can be triggered to call up the keyboard?

Re: Triggering soft keyboard programatically on the Torch

If I add an ontouchstart event listener to call an alert to the input field, it appears that I can trigger it elsewhere via element.ontouchstart()

Alas, still no keyboard. So, I'm thinking one simply can not trigger the soft keyboard via javascript. Can anyone at BB confirm?
