I'm looking to access a simple WSDL Web Service by pure Adobe ActionScript rather than MXML.
I know MXML and Flex would be the easiest route but I'm wondering if there's an efficient way to do this using ActionScript Mobile only?

Well, maybe I am not getting this. But can't you just construct the request (xml) as a string and send it to a endpoint? WSDL is only the description of the webservice. At its essence, you are just doint a http request by providing a input as a string that is formatted as xml. Can you explain what the issue is?
If you need to test the wsdl, i recommend soapUI. It will autogenerate a sample request from a WSDL. Maybe that's what you are looking for?

Thanks for the reply.
Using Flex Mobile, I can simply add a reference to my SOAP web service and call it by name.
I just wondered if there was a way to do this using pure Actionscript.
