Does 2.0.1 bring increased app security?

So 2.0.1 was released yesterday. Does it bring the promised encryption system for our precious applications?

Re: Does 2.0.1 bring increased app security?

Possibly. The format of the backup has changed, though it's unclear whether the full set of promised changes (e.g. encryption key tied to BBID) has been implemented or if what's there is just one step along the way.

I'd be a bit leery of relying on this without some sort of technical summary from RIM as to what we're dealing with.  A first glance has suggested to some developers that the same key is being used for all PlayBooks at the moment, which if true would make the change worthless for any protection for now.

I haven't examined it myself yet other than to verify it's not the same as it was.

Re: Does 2.0.1 bring increased app security?

This change did arrive with Tablet OS 2.0.1.  Backup files (.bbb) are now encrypted with a key that is tied to their BlackBerry ID.  This prevents applications from being restored to a PlayBook with a different BlackBerry ID.  It also removes the ability to use an archive tool (like WinZip) to easily extract application files from a backup file.
