Temporary workaround to no gps

Why can I not run google gears or the W3C standard for geolocation support in a webbrowser on the playbook? Anyone else trying to get an location via ip and have it work?

Re: Temporary workaround to no gps

The Playbook simulator doesn't have GPS support in it - at all.  I assume for this reason, these other tools you mention don't work either.  JTGen posted some code which you could use to simulate the GPS events in your own application for testing.

What I'm talking about is IP to location.

PlayBook IP address to geo location?  There is no API's for that.  To get a accurate location, you would need to publish that information for other clients to get access to.

Re: Temporary workaround to no gps

IP to location isn't very accurate on mobile devices... If you're on wifi, then it's mostly accurate. But if on a 3G/4G network, you could be given an ip that is potentially hundreds of miles off, or worse.

GPS and geolocation are our best bets, but as stated it's not available in the simulator.

I had to do all my testing on my android phone, then hoped and dreamed it would work on the device... I also did a lot of error checking and alert the user they need to enable the GPS device if there is one.

Re: Temporary workaround to no gps

Is GPS going to be available in the actual device, let alone the simulator???

Looking at the specs PDF (linked from http://us.blackberry.com/playbook-tablet/ ) :-

I couldn't see any reference to GPS. I was hoping GPS was gonna be in there, but now I'm not so sure.

Can anyone else confirm whether it's in or out?

Re: Temporary workaround to no gps

GPS will be on the device.

GPS on the simulator, like most devices like accelerometer, will need to have a script to send out state information.  There are some 3rd party applications that are in work to "stimulate" the simulator in thinking it is a real device.
