Welcome to http://supportforums.blackberry.com/
You can tell which version you have installed Blackberry Link
Respect al error that you listed, you are likely to mistake the sea tu windows corrupt.

Are you using any 3rd party firewall or are you using Kaspersky, try disabling or removing.
If not using Kaspersky which one are you using ?
Disable or (remove even better) your virus program.

Tried (took a long time) that including both stopping and full removal of Kaspersky got a different error message: Error 1935 occurred during the installation of assembly component (74FD3CE6-2A8D-0E9C-A01F-C88389A1E18E) HRESULT: 0x80073685.
also computer itself started showing previous error as well when I re-installed Kaspersky after failure of above suggestion and shutting down- is there ANY solution you have actually tried to this problem of BBlink NOT WORKING WITH windows 8.1 thanks!! Also any suggestions about how to remove any remnants of failed installation that would still be causing shutdowns.

The failed installations are not causing the shutdowns it is your Virus Program. The failed installations may be preventing a successful installation.
Please read all of this post, both pages.
Please check these links:
You must remove Kaspersky if your version is not compatible or you will never fix your issue. Also if Windows Defender is turned on turn it off if your version of Kaspersky is compatible.
Use this to remove Kaspersky: http://support.kaspersky.com/common/service.aspx?e
You may try leaving Windows Defender on if you remove Kaspersky.
Use this to remove BB Link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
If you do not use FIXIT do a SEARCH on your computer and delete all "blackberry" files found.

unfortunately all your suggestions are far too complex for me and some seem to not even apply to windows 8.1 so I am too concerned about destabilising windows 8.1 especially as removing Kaspersky did not help or fix the install- I think I will wait till BBlink is upgraded to being compatible with Kaspersky like most other programs on the market without it having to be uninstalled- very disappointing this new blackberry q10.

All those suggestions do apply to Win 8 !
You have already destabilised your OS !
It is not BB Link. Kaspersky just made a new virus program because the old one was not compatible with Win 8.

I dont think you have checked the links recently for example you suggested:
"Use this to remove BB Link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301"
but on this page it says:The Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (MSICUU2.exe) is no longer available from Microsoft.
If you cannot add, update, or remove a program on your computer, try this troubleshooter for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7:
