Yes I also suspected the drivers from the beginning but have already done all relevant updates from both ms and Sony with no luck...any way to figure out which driver is causing the problem?

Go to Control Panel, Device Manager and see if there are any yellow caution signs, if yes right click the Driver and Update, if Update fails click Uninstall then Restart computer.
I have links or documantation on other computers that will help you, I will find it soon and post back.

Still searching my files, just too many, I will check the web if I cannot find them, maybe I did not keep them.
Try this: right click the Installer, Properties, Compatibility, change the mode.

Verified all drivers, no luck. Tried installing under a different user profile, no luck. This is getting annoying...good thing I have a desktop with Link already installed.

Yes it is very annoying ! Willing to do more ? Try uinistalling all the BlackBerry and Rim Drivers found in Device Manager.
They are found in these 5 places: Blackberry, DVD/CD, Modems (Standard Modem only), Network Adapters, Ports.
Also in Disk Drives if USB Mass Storage was ever enabled on your phone.
Uninstall any BB software, using Search find and delete all blackberry files found, you do not have to delete any files found in Documents.
Power Off your computer (not a restart), power On wait 5 minutes then plug in your phone and let Windows reinstall all the Drivers wait at least 5 minutes then try installing Link.

Please read this carefully and expand the +'s to see info relevant to your system, something on your computer may be blocking the install and installing this way may help.
