I have found the orientation to be slow as well but in talking to a few developer friends, they believe it's an effort to hold orientation in case you DON'T want it to turn. In the case of iPad, it turns so quickly that it's almost annoying. But I agree that it could be a bit quicker.
My issue is more to do with the swipe action not following the gyroscope. When I'm in landscape mode, I have a heck of a time figuring out which way to swipe to get back to home screen (which by the way does not change to landscape and I find that a nuisance as well).
