BES 4.1.6 keeps stopping working...

All -

 

I know my subject line may be confusing, but I wanted to say 'stopping working' instead of 'crashing' because I'm not getting an actual crash.  Here's what is going on.

 

We just upgraded our Domino infrastructure this past weekend from 7.0.2FP2 to 8.0.1.  While our primary Domino servers (a mail server, an LEI server, and two application servers) are running on an iSeries under OS/400, the BES is running on a Windows 2003 server (fully patched, no outstanding updates).  Monday at about 6:01 PM central time and Tuesday at 4:40 PM central time the Domino server portion of the BES stopped processing any mail messages.  Here is a clip of what the last few lines look like:

We aren't a large organization (55 Blackberrys total deployed off this BES and this is our only BES) but we normally are showing log entries on the frequency of a couple a minute.  As you can see, we go from pretty busy to stopped.

 

My solution so far as been to completely reboot the server and it starts working again.  I have checked the windows Services and all of the BES-related services are running and appear to be fine.

 

Could I be running into an issue of Domino 8.0.1 and BES 4.1.6 running together?  Do I need to drop down to Domino 8.0 instead?   Should I be applying a fixpack of some sort?  For now, I can keep rebooting the server, but I am looking for some kind of a solution.

 

Suggestions?  If anyone wants any additional information, please ask and I will supply anything that I can.

BES 4.1 SP6 and Domino 8 work fine together ...

 

Need to see all the logs to know what is going on.

 

if you want, send me an email to bbandydufresne@gmail.com (with a link to this post / thread) with a day worth of logs and I'll see if I can see a root cause in there...

What log files do you need?  I can get you the log.nsf on the Domino server, but what other logs do you want/would you like?

An update with more information....

 

It looks like the problem I am having is on the BES side and not the Domino side.

 

It turns out that the server went down again last night.  I had a colleague tell me that they were unable to connect to our AS/400 using Rove Mobile software via MDS while the server was 'down'.

 

I'm guessing that there is a problem with the 4.1.6 install.  What logs/configuration should I look at to see what my problem is?  Anyone?

The BlackBerry Server logs.  By default installed in:

 

C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Logs

Looks like I may have stumbled across the problem.  I've been watching the BES like a hawk and finally found a service which could be the problem - nbes.exe

 

They gave the following solution:

 KB15931 - How to turn off rich content and In-line images for a BlackBerry smartphone user or groups...

 

This works across versions of Domino - 7 or 8.  I'm just very relieved to see it isn't a Domino 8 issue - it appears to be a 4.1.6 issue.

If it is any consolation, we are seeing the exact same thing. These "silent crashes" only began after installing going from 4.1.4 to 4.1.6. I'm also suspicious of the new rich text support and inline image support. Thanks for the info.

We're seeing the same problem on Domino 7.0.2FP2 since upgrading the BES to 4.1.6.  120 devices with various OS including 11 of 4.5 and 4.6.

 

The rich text feature is fantastic (at long last), it's a shame to have to turn it off since we've had a sudden rush on 'Bolds' over the past week.

Looks like 4.1.6 MR1 fixes the rich text problems.  Release Notes
