Blackberry devices can no longer send external emails ???

Okay this is a weird one and I have spend a few days looking into SEND AS permissions etc and this is still not resolved.  So here goes in trying to explain this overall situation.

Windows 2003 SP2 environment running BES version 4.1.6.14
Windows 2008 X64 environment running MS Exchange 2007
Some time around two weeks ago the blackberry devices stopped being able to send messages outside of the company. The dreaded red X is returned.
Blackberry devices all able to send emails internally and receive emails from everywhere but .  The message says "Desktop Email Program unable to submit message"

Looking at the BES logs I see this selection of messages

I have checked and reapplied the following things
1. BESADMIN exists in Active directory
2. BESADMIN account is local administrator on BES system
3. On Exchange system BESAdmin has send as authority
   commands issued
       add-exchangeadministrator "BESAdmin" -role ViewOnlyAdmin
add-adpermission -user "BESAdmin" -accessrights ExtendedRight -extendedRights Send-
       As, Receive-As, ms-Exch-Store-Admin
4. In MS exchange environment given BESAdmin ability to SEND-AS

I have looked at any fixes that have been applied in the same timeframe and they are as follows On the BES Windows 2003 environment
KB973904, KB976098-v2, KB973687, KB971737, KB974392, KB974318, KB973917
none of which are mentioned in any previous BES problems.

On the MS Exchange 2008 x64 environment
KB978207, KB972270 and KB976325
again none of which are mentioned in any previous BES problems.

The problem persists and I am now completely stumped.

Anyone else had this issue or similar ?

Nothing unusual on BES based on the logs that you posted.

Looks more like a mailbox issue. Is he able to send mail outside the company from his mailbox?

Re: Blackberry devices can no longer send external emails ???

Hi thanks for your reply - all the users that are having difficulties with BES can send emails without fail from exchange.  In fact every BES users is blocked which is why I am confused about the errors.

No-one is blocked from exchange.

Re: Blackberry devices can no longer send external emails ???

Hi ianLmurdoch,

Are you still experiencing this issue?

Basically, when a user sends email from their BlackBerry smartphone through the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, the message is sent using the service account (typically BESadmin).  If the service account is unable to send external messages, no users will be able to.

I would suggest verifying the service account can send messages externally.

Thanks!

This may be caused by a GC referral update, check KB13157.

Just a minor correction.

The BESAdmin account does not send the email. What it does is it logs in to the user's mailbox, place the email to the outbox. The mailbox then process the email and sends a status update to the BES (mail agent) which then marks the mail on the device with a check or an X.

Re: Blackberry devices can no longer send external emails ???

Sorry BBAMA, but your wrong.

The BB technical advsior who works for RIM is correct (Cpt_Sweatpants).

This is why the BES service account requires send as permisison, as it sends the email fomr its own acct ON BEHALF OF the user and thus needs SEND AS permisisons...

Since we already know that there is a permissions issue, your better  off just swapping servcie accounts:

Re: Blackberry devices can no longer send external emails ???

Based on 4.1 and 5.0 documentation (check here), this is what happens:

4. The BlackBerry Messaging Agent sends the message to the user’s email application.
5. The BlackBerry Messaging Agent sends a copy of the message to the Sent Items view in the user’s email application.
6. The messaging server delivers the message to the recipients.

to clarify step 4:

- using the send as permission the email is directly placed to the exchange server's outgoing queue.

If your familiar with MAPI, steps 4-6 is a single mapi function called "IMessage:Smiley Frustratedubmit". you can read it here under MAPI interfaces.

All three of us are wrong, the besaccount does not:

- send on an "ON BEHALF OF" basis

- does not log on the the user's mailbox to place the mail on the outbound queue

- does not send email from it's own mailbox (testing if the besadmin account can send mails won't help)
