after removing MSDE and SQL express did you do a reboot of the server?

Heh I had to go check because I couldn't remember, but yes it's been rebooted since removing MSDE and SQL Express.  I'm going to reboot it again tonight to see if it magically fixes it.

I guess I forgot to come back after rebooting...it's still not sticking, it just reverts back to the original settings.

I have heard of a couple others with same issue.

One person did a knife edge cutover to a rebuilt server to cure it.

 

Since you have uninstalled it and reinstalled it once a knife edge will knot be hard to do for you.
