Slow Message delivery, very high bandwidth use and a few others

I'm having several issues with a BES, but not really sure where to go from here to be honest.

First things first;

BES 4.1.4 for Lotus Domino

Domino 7.0.3 Mail Servers

1 x Local mail server (11 Blackberry users)

3 x Remote mail servers (2 / 3 / 4 Blackberry users)

I know that it isn't ideal to have mail servers on a remote network, but for the number of users involved it is not possible to justify a BES.

The problems we are seeing include;

The users on one of the remote mail servers are seeing severe delays at times for messages to be delivered to handhelds (sometimes up to 6 - 12 hours)

Same users not able to do remote lookups Bandwidth utilisation is high between the BES and this particular mail server (maxing out their 512k MPLS connection)

OTAFM not working properly (putting messages in folders on the Blackberry doesn't get reflected in the Lotus Notes mailbox) - this happens to most users, even the ones on the local mail server to the BES. Wireless Reconciliation is switched on and deletions seem to work fine

Apart from that, everything is working great!!

Anyone with any idea where I can start to get this sorted? Any help would be very gratefully received!!

Kind regards

Richard

Re: Slow Message delivery, very high bandwidth use and a few others

everything you listed points to latency / bandwidth problems.

Where is the SQL database for the BES?

Can you email me a days worth of BES logs to bbandydufresne@gmail.com (with a link to this post / thread) and I'll take a look to see if anything else is a problem

Re: Slow Message delivery, very high bandwidth use and a few others

Thanks Andy - the logs will be on their way pretty sharpish!

Basically, we have regionalised our BES's to Americas (in US), EMEA (in UK) and AsiaPac (in Singapore). The SQLServer is hosted from our UK office.

I can understand that having remote mail servers from the BES is not a great idea, but the worst affected are only in a single location, and 4 blackberry users are maxing out the 512k MPLS connection with Lotus Notes traffic (TCP1352) between the BES and Mail Server.

Is it basically a vicious circle? As a thread hangs, the work has to be requeued and redone, which then hits the bandwidth usage, which results in more hung threads....

Many than ks in advance

Richard

Re: Slow Message delivery, very high bandwidth use and a few others

Richard,

It is exactly as you pointed out.  A vicious circle, and eventually the BES gives up and says "Sorry, I can't effectively communicate, I quit.  Reboot me if you want to try again"

Some snips from the ALRT log:

[30000] (08/20 02:49:54.717):{0x90C} [Alarm::ActivateAlarm] Queuing alarm: <N/A> | BlackBerry Messaging Agent SG-SIN-BB-01 (Application Event Log on SG-SIN-BB-01) | 08/20/2008 02:49:54  (AFFF4EC6) -> OTAC slow sync timed out while waiting for response

Sorry man, you need more bandwidth / lower latency.

Re: Slow Message delivery, very high bandwidth use and a few others

We have 1 Domino BES and over 700 users on 64 separate Domino mail servers.  One mail server is next to the BES, the other sixty-three are remote, spread around the world.

By default the BES polls every user's mail file for changes every 20 seconds.

We have had some success increasing the Polling Interval.

We increased it to 60 seconds and the server load has been reduced dramatically.

The setting is in BB Mgr, right-click your server and choose 'Set Polling Interval'.

That is not going to help if you are having latency issues.
