Domain Migration with BES Express Server

We recently setup a new BES Express version 5.x server. Although we had an existing BES server, we wanted to start from scratch and transition users slowly so we did not migrate.

Just as we are finishing that up, we are now going into a domain migration. We will be building a completely new exchange environment and domain.

The current system is a virtual machine in a windows environment with Exchange 2003. We will be moving to a completely new Exchange 2010 environment on a completely new domain. There will be a trust setup between the 2 domains for a period of time.

What would be the best way to migrate this system with the least impact to the end users (reactivating, wiping phones, etc)?

Re: Domain Migration with BES Express Server

If not in the same exchange org, a wipe and type will be needed.

Re: Domain Migration with BES Express Server

Is this because of the inability to change  the Exchange server it is pointed to?

I see where you can change the Active Directory settings in the Server Configuration application.

Re: Domain Migration with BES Express Server

the BES DB can only work in one Exchange Org, Microsoft does not even support cross org migration as far as I know.

Re: Domain Migration with BES Express Server

BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express 5.0.2 supports the Enterprise Transporter tool. Configure and install the new BES, and then migrate a usrer's mailbox, and then migrate a BES user. Then run the handheldcleanup tool with a -u flag. This updates the user's mailbox information. It MIGHT work. Would be worth it just to try. If it fails, however, it does mean that a wipe and EA is required for all users.

Re: Domain Migration with BES Express Server

Yes this is possible using Blackberry Transport tool.

1. Setup new domain.

2. Setup new Exchange on new domain.

3. Setup new BES on new domain.

4. Migrate user mailbox user account to new domain.

5. Run blackberry transport utility to transport user from old bes to new bes.

Done.
