BES Mail Routing Question

I was recently asked by an auditor to clarify when the BES server sends mail directly.  I was always under the assumption that the Domino Server that housed the mail files was the only server that routes outgoing mail, but it would appear that when users reply to messages on their Blackberry device, they go out directly from the BES server. But it appears new messages are sent out the main Domino server. Can someone please clarify if and when the BES server would route outgoing mail.

Domino 8.0.2 server housing all mail files

BES 5.3 MR4 and Domino 8.0.2 with no mail files

Re: BES Mail Routing Question

Hi James,

the BES sends no mails. The BES uses the Domino APIs so send and receive messages. In your example the user sends an email from his BlackBerry device to thru your carrier and RIMs NOC to the BES. The BES decrypt/uncompressed this message and put them to the Dominos router "mail.box". After this the Domino will send the message like configured (directly, thru another Domino server, .....).

I hope this answered your question
