I'm having a lot of grief with a client with 2500 contacts whereby the contacts database stops syncing and often the phone starts performing very slowly and his battery life drains more rapidly. If we wipe the phone, delete his account on the server and re-add him and re-activate with nothing in his contacts its fine.
I've read a million posts and documents that refer to illegal characters in contacts but they are all vague with sentences such as "Avoid illegal characters eg "%+#", I haven't been able to find a definitive document about this problem. He had lots of +'s and &'s, I've done a global search and replace for the +'s and it doesn't appear to have a problem with & (even though some documents have listed it as illegal). He has a lot of European characters with umlauts etc but he has left the German language on the phone along with English so you would assume the phone should hand this.
So my real question is does anyone know of a definitive document about this problem with detail on what the phone can and can't cope with in Contacts as he also uses very long notes etc and has a lot of detail in each contact.
The other two phones in the site are fine with smaller contact databases.

Sorry, went to WES 2010 and missed your post.
What size is the contacts folder in KB?
Have you tried to copy only half over and see if it works better?
I had a user with a 30 meg video in the notes field in a contact screw up the sync before.
I dont know of a document aboot the characters, but have seen weird things when using a few special ones.
