Thanks for the like.  Yes, I hope this saves someone else a lot of trouble.  I also figured out another solution.  If you do use the default "e1000" NIC in VMware, the guest OS is using an antiquated Microsoft version of the NIC driver from 2002.  Downloading the latest driver update pack from Intel will update it and avoid this problem.  Now to update the NIC drivers on my other VM's to prevent other issues in other applicaitons.
