I'm having this issue as well. I've tried a mail server as well as an exim relay we have, and I get the same error. I've tested that I can send an email from the server via telnet on both. I've put in from addresses in the Compliance Notification setup and the Device Activation Email setup.

Well, it works for me now. I noticed in the logs some errors authenticating ldap, so I re-entered my password, re-entered the server and saved it. I also double-checked the smtp settings and just hit save again. Now it works.
