.wav files won't play with BES on Virtual Server using Media Player

I see several people fighting this issue so I'll post what finally solved my issue.

Our scenerio: Vociemail .wav files working with BES 4 physical server, but after upgrading to BES 5.02 virtual server they won't play. BES is on VMWare virtual 64-bit 2008 server.

Without sound devices you must verify your .wav file plays through Windows Media Player on the BES server - if running server group it's the server running attachement services. I copied a voicemail .wav file to server and opened from media player and it errored out needing a codec. I then installed our Communite codec (also needed this on new Windows 7 computers) and now the media player gets through the codec error but says no output devices - this is ok.

Now go to the Blackberry Admin Service/Blackberry Solution Topology/Blackberry Domain/Component View/Attachment/Server/<your instance>/Distiller display name WAV attachment/change attachment size to maybe 1024 (edit instance-save all-restart instance) AND then our devices played the voicemail .wav attachments.

Apparently something with playing through 3rd party app that you actually need a value in attachment size since this was working as zero on physical server configuration.

Re: .wav files won't play with BES on Virtual Server using Media Player

In my case, the Server is physical 2008 R2 64-Bit. It was working with AT&T and older Blackberries, several different models. We switched to CSpire and upgraded all 4 handhelds to Bold 9930 devices. None of them will play the WAV voicemail files. I went to play a sample wav file that plays fine on my XP Station. The Server did not have media player installed, went to the Microsoft website to see what player they would offer. The only choice they would give me for 2008 was version 11 for XP 32 Bit. Of course it would not install. I tried the XP 64Bit version and it too complained that it was not windows or dos software. Anyway, I don't see why the hosting Server being able to play the file has anything to do with the Blackberry playing it. The file size on the setting you mentioned was set to zero so I set it to 1024 and restarted the instance. I have to find one of the users to test it and will let you know, but I suspect it is not going to work. I have read some other posts and the 9930 seems to have an issue with WAV files.

Also, I am not sure the Server will play anything without speakers plugged in. It appears that it senses that and turns off audio if no speakers are installed. I was going to try VLC player, but like I said, I don't see what that has to do with the handset playing them. I can open and play them on my workstation fine from the same email copy.

Re: .wav files won't play with BES on Virtual Server using Media Player

Thank you for the posts but I'm not having any luck playing WAV files on a new Bold 9930. I changed the WAV size from 0 to 1024 and restarted but still getting the unsupported file format message on the device. JPGs and MP3s open OK.

We are using BES Express 5.0.1 on Server 2003 Std.

Our server does NOT have an audio card but it doesn't keep the other six BlackBerry devices we have from playing WAVs. I shouldn't have to install an audio card just to make the Bold 9930 happy should I?

The user previously had a 9650 and WAV attachments played fine.

Any other ideas? Thank you!

There aren't any errors in the event log and I've verified wmvcore.dll is in C:\Windows\System32.

Something I did find though was a file in the BES Logs folder titled "MAIL2_ASCL_01_20120605_0001.txt" (MAIL2 is our server name). The contents of the text file are below. Interesting because the time stamps in the file are the times that the attachment downloads were attempted.
