9810 Physical QWERTY keyboard issues

Hi all,

I have bought a new 9810 on ebay. I believe the phone has some stuff related to Vodafone Germany or something like that because of the welcome screen and icons. The phone was working great till yesterday I decided to update to the latest version: OS 7.1.0.825. The thing is the BB Desktop made all the steps, the phone is running again but my physical keyboard for any reason switched to QWERTZ (that's to say when you press "Y" you get a "Z" and viceversa).

Of course, the phone's keyboard is QWERTY and with the other version the phone came this was not happening (I didn't take down notes which was).

I navigated through the menues and discovered and option to change from QWERTZ to QWERTY but is only for the display keyboard not the physical one.

Today, I downgraded to version 7.1.0.714 but I have the same issue.

Can anybody help me please??

Regards!

Hello,

Based on the rest of your post, you have been lucky...your device was, until you updated, working fine. Such is not the result for all.

Actually, that "splash screen" is irrelevant. Every BB is originally manufactured for a specific carrier. Some of those carriers have BB place their carrier splash screen into the device ROM, and it can never be changed. However, it is meaningless in regards to using the BB on another carrier, and likewise means nothing in regards to what OS may be installed on the device. Indeed, the splash screen means nothing other than an indicator of the original carrier for which the BB was manufactured...nothing more...and is equal to the VendorID code.

Interesting...all that I can find indicate that the only setting available is for the virtual keyboard, but nothing documenting anything about the physical keyboard. Therefore, what I suspect is that it has to do with the core OS package you installed, and what carrier it came from, and how it differs from what you previously had running on your BB. Sadly, since you took no notice of what you hade before, there is no way to now know what you need to revert to...rather, you will need to experiment to find the right one for your situation. For OS package reference, please refer to this KB:

  • KB05305Localization support for BlackBerry smartphones

I do not know if you need Multi-Language, All-Language, or some other package. Likewise, I do not know if packages from different carriers will act differently for your situation. But, with that as reference, here is a process:

Please refer to this official download portal as you proceed. It is sorted first by carrier -- so if all you want are the OS levels your carrier supports, your search will be quick. However, some carriers are much slower than others to release updates. To truly seek out the most up-to-date OS package for your BB, you must dig through and find all carriers that support your specific model BB, and then compare the OS levels that they support.

From a PC, you can install any compatible (e.g., for your exact BB Model Number) OS package to a BB via this procedure:

Note that while written for "reload" and the Storm, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload any BB device model -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC. After installing the OS package to your PC, please remeber to delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML...there will be at least one, and perhaps 2, and they will be located in or similarly to (it changes based on your Windows version) these folders:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
  • C:\Users\(your Windows UserName)\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML

Be sure that you remove, from your PC, any other BB device OS packages as having more than one installed to the PC can cause conflicts with this procedure.

If the problem persists, return to the top and try a different package.

If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:

  • KB19915How to perform a clean reload of BlackBerry smartphone application software using BlackBerry Desktop Software

Good luck and let us know!

Re: 9810 Physical QWERTY keyboard issues

Thank you so much for your answer!!

Based on all the information you provided me I tried to make a downgrade with Desktop software to the different version it allows me to (they are 5). No one of those worked Smiley Sad

On the other hand, I now installed and have working ATT version 7.1.0.912 and i have the exact same issue. I will try with another one with that webpage you provided me.

Thanks!

Re: 9810 Physical QWERTY keyboard issues

Good luck. I have no way to tell you how many different ones you will need to try. You could get lucky with only a few attempts. Or, it may require you to try dozens of those available in order to find the one that functions the way you desire.

It actually seems quite strange indeed that this would be the case, especially with the ATT version...that surely should be purely QWERTY. So, at some point, you may want to investigate the use of a stringent WIPE...BBSAK (bbsak.org) can perform a very stringent WIPE. Then, you can load the OS cleanly and not perform any restores from backup. Doing that process certainly should be the cleanest it can be.

Good luck and let us know!
