Sorry for bumping this Thread up.
I had the same problem.
Searched all unread messages and opened all. Nothing changed.
Battery out and everything works fine now.
The difference is that i have a Curve 8520 v4.6, but problem solved, so everything is fine :-)

I have never had that happen to me on my Bold, but it used to happen all the time on my old Pearl. It seems to happen when you have a new mail, and then you hard boot the phone before you read it.
I can't exactly remember how I got rid of it, but I cleaned out all my message folders, and then pulled the battery. I did something else after that, I just can't remember what it was. Its been a long time since I had that phone.
Try the hard boot though, it may help...

I had the same issue and i went to
Selected my main (Inbox) - which prompted me to select folder or collapse or full menu
and there was one message of Activation, for some reason my actual inbox did not appear.
I opened the message and the 1 email notice dissapeared and the normal inbox opens from that location now.
hope this helps

Likewise, apologies for writing on an old thread, but I've been struggling with this same problem but just found a fix that might help other folks with this issue.
I have a Bold 9780, and after fighting with it due to several other bugs I did a complete security wipe with OS reinstall and then a restore from backup via the desktop software.
In my case, I found that the unread messages (36 of them!) were actually records of missed phone calls that I had ignored at the time, but which showed up in the message list (Homescreen > Messages) in bold type. These missed call notifications were evidently reloaded when I did the restore, and since they were unread, they showed up as unread messages in the notifications space. I just had to scroll through the list to find them, and open or delete them. Problem solved.
Hopefully this will help someone else.
