Another 'Wifi with no data plan' Question - Rogers Canada

Hey guys, I'm new to this forum and Blackberries in general...so please bear with me.

I am a student. Currently I have a basic voice plan on an LG Xenon with Rogers in Canada. It includes minutes as well as unlimited texting. Enough for me.

I am looking to buy a Blackberry Curve 3G/9300 off someone. I want to just throw my sim card in it so I can use my normal plan with the phone. My understanding is that I can phone Rogers and tell them to block all data so I won't get any hidden charges on my bill. Fine. However I also understand that the 9300 is a wi-fi phone.

Let's say I get the 9300, call Rogers and tell them to block all data on my plan.
Can I still use my browser in a Wi-Fi hotspot? How do I go about doing so? (I know I've read somewhere that you have to configure it to be on the hotspot and not talkspot...if someone could help me out with this that would be great.)

Also, I have read that in order for me to even be able to use wi-fi, I need to have data "on" in the phone. If data is "on" in the phone but I have blocked data with Rogers, can I still use wi-fi? Would this prevent the data charges on my bill?

Also, I understand that I won't be able to recieve picture messages without a data plan. Again, if I'm in a wi-fi hotspot..can I recieve these pictures messages?

I'm sure this is a very well known and well loathed question to you all, and I truly apologize for asking, but I just need some clarification. I don't want to be stuck with a big bill with data charges I never intended on paying. If anyone could help me out with this, I'd really appreciate it.

Thank you so much!

Stefanie

Re: Another 'Wifi with no data plan' Question - Rogers Canada

This helps, thanks! It's a shame you can't use MMS messaging without data, but I guess that's what you get for trying to beat the system. I wish I could get some sort of confirmation on whether or not I can still use wi-fi if Rogers has my data blocked. If anyone knows the answer to this please let me know!
