Put the BB back together and same as before...
holding the power button for long enough seems to turn the unit off off (no light and windows shows a disconnected device)

Ok.. what I did
On XP (in this case in a parallels VM) I uninstalled all blackberry related software giving me a clean slate.
I DID NOT install desktop manager.
loader.exe /noJVM and selected 'next' when it said device unknown
This failed half way though... but thats ok as it then had a '507' whitescreen reboot loop!
loader.exe (this time without the /jvm bit)
it saw the serial number so just followed the onscreen instructions
battery left in the whole time as was the sim card.
I hope this helps someone else

It wasnt recognised by the PC. The USB port was still 'in use', windows just didnt know what to do with it.
The software I mentioned required only that level of connectivity. A quick google will find it for you.

I could possibly be a real genius... of course - I am a female...
I fixed my problem.
I plugged my BB using "USB" into my MAC.
Brought up BB desktop and at the top left of my screen I clicked BB desktop software - I then clicked "Check for updates".
When this screen loaded I clicked on whatever one said "recommended" next to it...
This wiped my phone but brought it back to life again.
At first my phone came up with "Restore software 507" and I was like..... uhhhhh no... I'll try it another way. SO I did, and my phone is working normally again.
After hours of research I found NOTHING. So try this and I really really really hope it works for you too... As gorgeous as BB's are, they are a pain in my BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!!
Good luck people, keep us posted

Removing the battery does nothing. I have had my BB for months and stopped using it and now it will not swich on.. when i put it on charge it comes up with a battery with a blue lightening thing and then after a while turns off, I have removed the battery for 2 days and also seconds and nothing. Please tell me there is something else I can do!
