I went thru the same frustration. Most tips I read didn't work, including repairing MS Outlook's inbox (which didn't find any problems). The following link to RIM's knowledge base article worked like a charm, even though I'm running BM 5.0 and not one of the earlier versions of BM that the article was written for.
