BB Instant Messenger Tones Help

Hi. Not sure if this is the right place to post this but im having some problems with my new BB.

Ive had it less than a week and im getting more familiar with its features and how it operates, however, ive set up the BB instant messenger using PIN.

Now, the main problem is the sound notifications for the messenger.

In "BlackBerry Messenger Alert" I set "out of holster" to 'tone' and the volume to 'medium'. And, in:

"BlackBerry Messenger New Message" - The same.

When i recieve the INITIAL chat request, my phone makes the sound ive set. Once in the messenger chatting i still get the notification sounds.

I have tried all manner of different setting from muting, and setting 'tone' to 'none'; both in holster and out of holster.

Basically, i want my phone to notify me of the initial/new message, but NOT beep/sound during the actual conversation.

Help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: BB Instant Messenger Tones Help

Hi and welcome to the forums!

So it you want to be notified of a new message only would the stetting be:

New message, select tone, volume, count, play sound in holster.

For messenger alert set tone volume 0 and use vibration as the device is in your hand.

Did I read you right?

Thanks,

[ Edited ]

Thanks for the reply, Bifocals. Appreciated.

I think you did read me right, but i think im not reading you right.

Settings (For Normal Profile)

BlackBerry Messenger Alert: (out of holster)

Out Of Holster: Tone

Ringtone: Alarm_QuickBell

Volume: Medium

Number of Beeps: 2

Repeat: LED Flashing

Number of Vibrations: 1 (Cant set to '0'. only 1, 2 or 3)

(In Holster)

The settings are set the same (Should these be different?)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BlackBerry Messenger New Message: (out of holster)

Out Of Holster: None

Ringtone: Alarm_QuickBell (cant be changed to 'none' or 'mute')

Volume: Mute

Number of Beeps: 2

Repeat: LED Flashing

Number of Vibrations: 1 (Cant set to '0'. only 1, 2 or 3)

(In Holster)

The settings are set the same (Should these be different?)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From what i can gather from the different titles, BlackBerry Messenger Alert(1) is for the initial / first chat request; and BlackBerry Messenger New Message(1) is for every other message during a conversation.

* I want a notification for this setting

* I do not want notifications or vibrations for this setting...

...thats if ive understood (1) correctly.

Ive tried the above settings the other way round, and a mix of 'tone' / 'mute' etc. I either get sound for every message during the chat, including the first / initial chat request, OR No sound for any activity including the initial chat request and every other new message.

Thanks.

Re: BB Instant Messenger Tones Help

Hello Father!

From the BBM manual:

You can set notification options, such as vibrate or tone, for BlackBerry® Messenger in the sounds application. The BlackBerry Messenger New  Message item specifies how you are notified of incoming BlackBerry Messenger messages. The BlackBerry Messenger Alert item specifies how
you are notified when a contact that you have set an availability notification for becomes available
.

So I really don't want to know who becomes available which is the Alert Item.

I do want to know when I get a message sent to me. However when I am conversing I do not

want any notification or vibration for each message. Is that what we both want?

(Okay we want  world peace as well, but lets stick with BBM OK?)Smiley Very Happy

Below are the links for all user manuals for Blackberry Messenger.

And an article by our community manager on ringtone setup.

Let me know if that is correct.

Thanks,

Re: BB Instant Messenger Tones Help

So basically, you're saying i cant achieve what i want to do then?

I did read the links you posted, prior to you posting them, but its not very clear as to what can be achieved regarding the BBM.

Ive now downloaded the latest version of BBM.

theres only one person in my BBM contact list, and all i want is to be notified of the initial chat request, but not get a beep/sound when she replies in the conversation. I see no point in having it beep during the conversation as i have the phone in my hand so i dont need notifying of new replies. Its a tad annoying and a waste of battery power.

Thanks for your help, Bifocals. Appreciated.
