BB Torch 9810 Charging Problems

My 9810 is dead, will not charge or boot.

 

The problem started when I went to recharge my phone, battery was low.  When I plugged in the microUSB I did not get the normal screen, just a black screen with a blinking red/amber light.

I've read through the posts on charging problems, tried the battery pull, wait, replace battery, as described, but nothing seems to help, phone remains dead, black screen, only the blinking red/amber light.

 

BTW, it's very troubling to see so many issues related to charging similar to mine.  Since my phone is barely 2-weeks old, I'm taking it back and I am seriously thinking to try a different one, i.e. not BB.

 

Any suggestions?
