Just a FYI with anyone else out there questioning this.... after 25 days of LOVING my Bold I have been on this board and At&t's board and have called RIM support and everyone that I can possibly think of..... I have finally found an answer:
YES there is a back lighting issue / keyboard lighting issue with some of the Bolds... It is a device issue..... You need to either call and report this or go to the store in which you purchased it and they will replace the unit.
