Beats by Dre have stopped working

For more than a year my son has used his Beats by Dre ear buds with his Torch.  Two days ago they stopped working.  When you plug them into the phone with media player on screen, it continuously flashes between headphone connection and speaker.  Hard to explain but the phone thinks the headphones are being plugged in and out rapidly.  Bottom line is they can't be used.  Tried the same headphones in my Bold and same problem.  Both of us have used these with no problems for a long time and they work perfectly when plugged into an iphone or the computer.  Any ideas?  Why would this start all of a sudden?  $200 headphones now useless.

Have you tried a battery pull on the blackberry?
