BlackBerry Tour 9630 and the "multimedia" hype

hello,

I have been watching new devices for a year now, I have always understood the new features advertized :
the Pearl flip... flips
the Storm has a Q-VGA SurePress touchscreen,
the Curve 8350i has Direct Connect, with or without camera
the Curve 8900 has a Q-VGA screen and Wi-Fi
the Bold has 3G and a screen smaller than Q-VGA
the future BlackBerry Gemini 8520 will have the trackball replaced by an optical sensor

but I am quite surprised about the Tour. Okay, it's like the successor of the 8830, and is a bit like the Bold but with CDMA, and Q-VGA. Why is it always advertised as being the first true multimedia BlackBerry device ? Regarding multimedia technologies, I don't see it better than a "regular" 8900 that was released a few months ago. Did I miss something ?

to make things short :

9530 = 9500 + CDMA
9630 = 9000 + CDMA + QVGA = 8900 + CDMA + 3G

My Device: BB Tour 9630 / Sprint

Re: BlackBerry Tour 9630 and the "multimedia" hype

haha yes i too found the generic  term curious too. just food for thought here. wondered if is a retractable bone to sprint/bb users who yearn for true mms for years now? i doubt it will, but has anyone heard whether the mms nightmare will continue for sprint/bb users with this phone as well?

My Device: Verizon Blackberry Tour

Re: BlackBerry Tour 9630 and the "multimedia" hype

I can't speak to the various devices you listed, except the Verizon 8830 World Edition (to which I say - the Tour is a BIG leap ahead in technology).  But one thing you don't mention any of the other devices as having is the capability to make short videos, which is possible with the Tour.  In fact, the first day I got it, I made a short video and sent it to my parents via email.

Re: BlackBerry Tour 9630 and the "multimedia" hype

all devices with a trackball of a wheel can take videos as long as they have an OS 4.5 or higher. Meaning if you install the latest Os on a 8830, it's got video camera too.

That's interesting, since my 8830 doesn't even have a camera.  A trackball it has, but there's no camera.

sorry, I misread the reference. I was reading 8330 which indeed has a camera for pictures and videos.

Re: BlackBerry Tour 9630 and the "multimedia" hype

okay now, I remember my main point about the camera.
For all BlackBerry devices with a trackball or a touchscreen, there is a camera that can take pictures and camera, except :
- 8800/8810/8820/8830 series
- one model of Curve 8350i "Direct Connect"
- one model of Tour 9630

Re: BlackBerry Tour 9630 and the "multimedia" hype

I was pleasantly surprised to find out that on Sprint, incoming MMS messages actually are MMS messages and not a link to PicutreMail anymore. Yay!
