BlackBerry torch 9800. Screen gone blank

Please can you help?

My BlackBerry Torch 9800 has decided to go blank on me.  One minute I had everything on screen and the next it was blank.  Can't read anything, phone numbers, texts, emails, BB messages, nothing. It's as if the light went out. It still recieved incoming calls, I just can't see anything on the screen.   I don't really want to change my phone if it can be helped, so is there a way of fixing it

Hi and Welcome to the Community!

Anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness shows up, the first thing to try is a proper reboot:

  • Pre-BB10 Devices ONLY. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes.
  • BB10 Devices. Hold the top button down until the counter reaches zero. Wait for the device to be fully shut down (e.g., nothing at all displayed on the screen, no LED lights, etc.). Hold the top button until the red LED is lit. Wait through the full boot-up process. If this fails, you can attempt the battery-pull method above, but it is normally NOT recommended unless nothing else works.

See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.

I have done as you suggested, but screen still blank. I guess it has died Smiley Sad Thanks for your help.

It is possible that you are correct...but there is more you can try. Sometimes leaving the battery out for longer can fix things. Other times putting it on a charger, removing the battery, and the putting the battery back in can recover it.

You also can attempt to boot into Safe Mode:

  • KB17877 How to start a BlackBerry smartphone in Safe Mode

It may take you multiple attempts to get the ESC key sequence (press/release/hold) correct, so be patient. When successfully into Safe Mode, see what happens.

If the behavior ceases, then think carefully...what happened just before this behavior started? A new app? An update? A Theme? Something else? Think carefully as the smallest change could be causal...and attempt to undo whatever that was.



But if the behavior continues in Safe Mode, then you may need to consider more drastic actions -- WIPE, OS Reload, BBSAK Wipe/Reload, and the "Bare Bones" OS Reload Process. To prepare, you should be sure that you have a full backup to your PC...please review the Backup link in my auto-sig on this post for instructions.

Still no joy.  I guess It is a hardware problem and I will have to get the screen repaired.  Frustrating not to be able to see anything on the screen though, there is a 'shadow' but not clear enough to read anything.

Thanks for all your help, I will now go and seek a nice repair person who will treat my Torch with kindness, sympathy and respect. Smiley Happy

Incidentally, I have not had any updates for a couple of weeks, and all I did was hand my phone to my 12yo to call his dad and the screen literally went blank. Neither of us pressed anything except 'unlock'. Strange. I think maybe it is just tired and has been used constantly since I bought it!

Anything is possible. I knew a guy once who seemed to totally "zap" every device he touched...we suspected his body had a very high electrical charge of some kind. But extensive medical research to figure it out was not possible, so we simply never let him touch any of our things.

All devices, of course, have a limited lifespan...and that lifespan is not predictable, and will usually be quite unique to each specific device. Your's may well have reached it's end. But an evaluation, in hand, by a qualified BB hardware technician is indeed your best bet I think.
