Blackberry Curve 8310

I have been trying to backup the data from my blackberry curve 8310.  It will be the first time.  Downloaded the latest version of blackberry desktop software.  I bought a new usb cable specifically for the 8310 to be sure it will be properly connected.  Connected the device to the laptop.  For about 2 seconds it showed device connected to pc then got disconnected.  Please walk me through in backing up the data.  Thanks!

Re: Blackberry Curve 8310

Well, all that is correct.

Can you try using a different USB port on your laptop?

Re: Blackberry Curve 8310

Thanks for the quick response!  Before I posted my help request, I have been plugging the usb cable alternately to the 2 ports on my laptop.  The result is the same - shows connected for about 2 seconds then disconnects.

Per trouble shooting instruction in the blackberry desktop software, I have turned on the mass storage.  The media card prompt is on but there is no media card in the device.  Should I turn in off?  Another instruction is to turn off the syncronization on the laptop.  However, there is no syncronization activated.  Also, I have to turn off any anti-virus software.  My laptop has Malwarebytes Anti-malware software.  I don't know how to turn it off.  Should I uninstall it first then install if and when I am successful in backing up the data from my 8310.  Please let me know.

As additional information, the 8310 is v.4.5.0.81 (Platform 2.7.0.78.  Is this compatible with the latest version of the desktop software that I downloaded from blackberry.com.

Will appreciate your early response.  Thanks.

Re: Blackberry Curve 8310

Yes, it is compatible, however you might try a lower desktop software version such as v6

Re: Blackberry Curve 8310

Thank you for forwarding to me the archived BDM software.  I was able to successfully download the data from the device to the pc only yesterday.  It took me about a week to do it.  I used the BDM V.5.1.  The name of the back up file is Backup(2013-05-20).ipd.  However, I cannot open and view the file.  The pc prompts me to use a web or internal programs to be able to open the file.  Should there be a particular file path that I should use for the backup? Please advise on how to open or nest step/s for me to do to be able to open the file.  Thanks.

Re: Blackberry Curve 8310

Hello,

Natively, there is no use of that file on the PC...it's sole intent is to be the source of restore to a BB. The file format is proprietary, and not natively readable via PC.

But, there are 3rd party PC apps that can parse and present the file in human readable format...a few seconds on google should reveal adequate IPD/BBB reader software for you (for free, AFAIK).

Depending on what your actual base requirement is, you may actually want to conduct a different process. For example, if your requirement is to extract your contacts from your BB to a file on your PC that you can use for some purpose (e.g., import to a different device), then you may instead want to conduct the Export process (instead of the backup process) and the result will be a CSV file on your PC, which you can then use.

So please clarify your base intent, for you started with "backup", and you have now successfully done that...but you seem to now want to do something more.

Good luck!
