If I check the logs folder I find Desktop.log has:

The application puts up a splash screen and a BDM window which blanks after a few seconds and then sits at 50% CPU and does not respond.
I never get to the "Welcome to Blackberry Desktop Software" message.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Who, in your post, is "you" (as in "Your software doesn't work" and "you don't know why")? If, perhaps, you believe that, by posting here in this site, you are communicating with RIM, then you are mistaken. This site is a user-to-user community of volunteers who attempt to help out other kind souls to the best of their ability. This site is not a user-to/from-RIM channel for any formal communications whatsoever. All of that information should have been provided to you when you signed up for this site.
That said, hopefully some of the kind volunteers might be able to help you interpret what you have posted...
Lastly, their software does indeed work...perhaps not in 100% of cases, but I can attest that it definitely does work. Specific circumstances can cause problem, of course...as with all hardware and software, designed and built by humans, perfection cannot be expected. Further, an extrapolation, from posts in this site, that the "software doesn't work" (which, as worded, is a blanket statement, intending to implicate 100% of cases), is IMHO invalid...we tend to hear only from folks with problems here...we tend never to hear from the percentage of the population that experiences no problems and all is well.
Nevertheless, I suggest this thread:
It starts with a process for cleanly starting over, and there is some discussion, and there is also a post (15) with links to older Desktop Software versions, if those are needed. Note that this is not, by any means, guaranteed to work...but it has worked for many to resolve issues they are having.
