I tried to associate my phone again this morning in case the BlackBerry servers needed 12 hours to realize the old phone wasn't being used anymore but it didn't work. Any other ideas? Was there something that Verizon needed to do in order for this process to work?

After working with Verizon and BlackBerry we ended up doing the following:
- Ensure all phones and computer logins to BlackBerry App World were logged off.
- Backed up my new phone
- Performed a Security Wipe of my Emails, Contacts, Etc.
- After the device was wiped I set my BlackBerry ID to be my old one and was able to login just fine.
- Restored my database through the Backup Restore functionality in the BlackBerry Device Manager.
