So I've returned to my Bold today after a long break due to my other smartphone being stolen recently. It's asking me to login with my BB id.
I used the old password I'd held on to but it didn't work so I must have changed it since. So I changed the BB id password through my desktop and tried to input that. Again, it told me login failed.
I did a complete power off reboot and tried again. Login failed again.
I'm now on my last try after nine out of ten attempts to log in failed. I don't want to get locked out of my phone - who's able to help make my last shot count?

Only one try left means success is most unlikely...but you should not get locked out of your BB. Please see this "sticky" post for helpful information concerning your BBID situation:
In addition, since you are trying to use something that's been out of service for a while, with a strong carrier network signal (e.g., not merely WiFi), I suggest the following steps, in order, even if they seem redundant to what you have already tried (steps 1 and 2 each should result in a message coming to your BB...please wait for that before proceeding to the next step):
1) Register HRT
2) Delete and Resend Service Books (pre-BB10 devices only)
Hopefully that will get things going again for you! If not, then you should contact your mobile service provider for formal support and to be sure that your account with them is provisioned for the services you desire (e.g., you need a BIS data plan, not a generic one).
