Don't know if you finally have a solution.....  

You have to keep the 'return' button DOWN during the entire time the phone is booting up, when the booting is done, then release the 'return' button.

Thanks for the reply.  Yes, I did end up resolving the issue but I had to reload the OS using Desktop Manager.  I attempted to use BBSAK to see if I could find the .cod files associated to the BBM program, but I was unable to do so.  In any case, the process to reload the OS wasn't too difficult and I was able to recover everything else from backups I did on BlackBerry Protect.  I'm going to stay away from the BBM update until any issues are resolved though.
