Bold 9780 - Apps don't work on Wi-fi

Hi guys,

 

I am a BlackBerry noob so I need your help. I just bought a Bold 9780 and I have no data plan, only Wi-fi.

 

First of all, is it still true that a lot of BB apps do not work over Wi-fi? Because I can't get anything to work over my wi-fi connection, not even the browser.

 

I read some articles on how to make the "wi-fi browser default" but I can't seem to find any "advanced options" setting in het "options" menu of the phone, so I can't exactly check why things are not working.

 

I would first want to make sure that my BB actually has an internet connection. Is there some kind of logo to see whether it is actually connecting to the internet? I can see the wifi logo (half circles) but that's all. I am suspecting that the phone isn't getting any further than my router.

the option may be under browser config in the options that you would access through the actual browser.

Salvi, Greetings, and welcome to the BlackBerry.com Community Support Forums.

 

WiFi works for the HotSpot browser... not for BlackBerry Data Features. Some third party apps like Pandora Radio will work on WiFi only.

 

You must ahve the BlackBerry Data Plan, in order to get the RIM push email functions you are looking for, as well as addtional BlackBerry data services such as the internet browser, Facebook for BlackBerry, BlackBerry Messenger, and much more.

I managed to get the browser working.

 

I reactivated Data Services in the Mobile Network section in order to get Wi-fi working. The Wi-Fi diagnostics, also neatly hidden in one of the menus, told me that was the problem.

 

So apparently "Data Services" is not only the EDGE/3G part of the cellular network, but also the Wi-Fi.

 

Two questions remain:

 

 

  1. Is there any option to make sure the phone does not make a mobile data connection ($$$)? Disabling data services works, but also kills your (home) Wi-Fi. (I learned it the hard way with my previous phone, it had data connection activated for like half an hour on the first day and it's very expensive)
  2. Why doesn't App World work on a Wi-Fi connection? That seems a bit strange. Now I have to use a USB cable and my PC.

Is there a nice collection of Apps available for people without the BlackBerry Data Services? Because I will be switching to a low cost EDGE/3G Mobile Internet provider soon, but they don't have BlackBerry Servers so I guess most apps will still not work.

1. Anytime you are connected to a WiFi router, all data will flow through the WiFi connection.

If you want to ensure this, go to your Manage Connections screen and turn off your Mobile Network to your service provider.

 

2. AppWorld does work on WiFi... as long as you have a BlackBerry Data Plan.

 

I don't know of any collection of apps for WiFi only. There are some, I just don't know of a collection.

If you want apps, and can't use AppWorld, use mobihand.com

JSanders, could you please verify your information on this matter.

 

I was under the impression that BlackBerry AppWorld would not connect via WiFi, even with a BlackBerry data plan in place.

 

Since your response suggested otherwise, I connected my BB via WiFi (with a strong signal) and disconnected my network connection.  I was unable to connect with AppWorld, with the message "Unable to connect....verify your network connections."

 

If I'm missing something here, clarification would be appreciated.  Smiley Happy

Well, I certainly stand corrected... I tested the same and got the same message.

I'd never tested that, but I know now.

I now have a new mobile internet provider without BIS. BB Browser works, App World seems to have kicked off so that is working as well and even WhatsApp is working just fine without BIS/BES, although I thought it wouldn't.

Me too.  I could not get my Apps World activate thru wifi.

I have a full BB plan and it works only when I turn on my 3G data.

 

My browser, BB Messenger and push mail work perfectly fine thru wifi...but BB Apps world, it just states "Data not in operation"

 

Please advise if any
