Bold 9900 not keeping messages

Hello,

I am fairly good when it comes to technolog, but cannot seem to figure out this problem.

My emails and text messages are automatically deleted from my phone. Not immediately, but it is more like there are too many messages and when new ones come in the oldest ones are deleted. I do get a lot of messages but that shouldn't be a problem. My other models have not had issues in the past.

As an example the emails only go back less than 4 weeks and same with my text messages.

Currently I have 5.7 GB free space in my built-in media storage and another 3.0GB on my media card. I purchased this phone in August 2011 brand new, so no previous owner.

I have also ensured that in the "Message Display and Actions" section the 'Days to keep messages' has been set to 'Forever'.

I have tried saving them on the SIM card as well...when that happens it shows up that the card is full despite the amount of room available on it.

I don't know what else to try.

Please help,

Thanks,

Erik

Re: Bold 9900 not keeping messages

Hi and Welcome to the Community!

Here are some guidelines to use:

  • KB02843What is the Low Memory Manager feature on the BlackBerry smartphone
  • KB14320How to maximize free space and battery power on the BlackBerry smartphone
  • KB14213Call logs, SMS text messages, and email messages are deleted from the BlackBerry smartphone

Lastly, it is always important to properly close applications when you are done with them. Using the Back or the Red key will not do this -- those leave it to the app to decide what to do...and some will leave themselves resident in memory, consuming resources on your BB, slowing the overall performance. Rather, to close an app, press blackberry_logo.jpg and select "Close" or "Exit"...that will force the application to be closed, freeing up for your new use the resources it was consuming. Some apps will always remain running (typically -- BBMessenger, Browser, Homescreen, Phone, and Messages)...but, you should still close them properly - especially the Browser...if it is left on an active web page, it will not only consume extra resources but battery power as well.

Further, anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness creeps in, the first thing to do is a battery pop reboot. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure. Some have taken to doing this on a regular basis as a preventive measure...some as frequently as once per day. Others have obtained the QuickPull app to automate a simulated Batt-Pull.

Good luck!

Thank you for the tips but unfortunately I have already been on this site and went through the necessary steps, however the problem still exists.

thanks,

Ahhh...OK...sorry for providing you with redundant advice then. To avoid that again, can you please detail out exactly all that you've already tried, including the specific results of each attempt?

Thanks!

Re: Bold 9900 not keeping messages

I have removed all unused applications and deleted all languages...I have a lot of available storage on my phone (or so it is telling me).

Performance is absoultely fine with this, it has nothing to do with too many applications being opened. I also has nothing to do with not enough storage as I have checked that...HOWEVER I don't know how to look at the Low Memory Manager to see if that is an issue but I dont' think it is as its never came on. I don't do a lot on my phone, it is purely for business with very few games, video watching, podcasts etc.

I have changed so the pictures being saved go to the media card instead of the phone.

I cannot remember some of the other things I have done. One thing I haven't been able to is:

I cannot seem to be able "To set the Auto More option to No"

For BlackBerry Device Software 6.0 and higher
On the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, tap All and open a message list.
Display the menu and select Options.
Select Message Display and Actions.....I CANNOT SEEM TO FIND THIS OPTION HERE (I have looked and there are only 9 options but I cannot seem to find this one...this is one of the steps I could not complete).
Remove the check from the Auto More option.

I have screen captures of my memory databases and storage areas if you would like to see them. I would be greatful if we could connect over the phone or email as it saves me time and I can respond directly from my phone instead of the computer.

Thanks,

Erik

Ahhh...this perhaps...

Is it perhaps a corporate/BES enabled device, working with your corporate BES system? If so, then you need to work with your BES admins...if they need additional help, they can ask other BES admins for advice in the BES section of this forum:

If not, then there will be more things for me to recommend for you...and, to prepare, you'll want to review (and conduct) the backup processes documented via the link in my auto-sig on this post. You will need that backup so that you can restore after several of the things I'll have you attempt (but only if you are not BES...again, if you are BES, stop now and work with your BES admins).

If you are on BES, you will want to ask your BES admins about this as well. If you are not on BES, then provide your full OS level (the 4 octets please, not the "bundle" information) and I might have a simulator on which I can try and replicate the steps:

  • KB23393 How to check the model number and version of installed BlackBerry device software on a BlackBerry smartphone

Yes, that would be nice...but...you see, neither I nor any of the primary participants on this site have anything to do with any formal "paid" support. Rather, this site is a community of users who volunteer time to try and help out other users. As such, I have no business structure by which to accommodate this request...and if I did, it would likely then venture into a "paid support" model, which our forums are definitely not party to.

Good luck!

Re: Bold 9900 not keeping messages

I work for myself so no admins to talk to.

My OS level: 7.1 Bundle 2108 (v7.1.0.746 Platform 5.1.0.546)

I am leaving work for the day as I have to prepare for a huge family fish fry tomorrow so won't be responding back tonight but will be back on here tomorrow morning with phone fully backed up and ready to go.

If you have any other quick questions I can complete, but won`t be able to do any major work as I leave my computer at the office and that is how I back up my phone.

Thanks,

Erik

OK...well the BES question still remains...there are places that will sell hosted BES, even to individual users; if you are using those, then you need to talk to that entity for admin support. You can tell if you are on BES by virtue of what you can get to OTA sync...if you get anything more than calendar and contacts (e.g., Tasks, Notes) from Outlook, then you are on BES. If you get Calendar, Contacts, both, or neither, then you are on BIS.

Perhaps the basic question is -- who is your email provider?

Hmmm...the closest I can come is a simulator for the 9900 on .318, but I doubt seriously that there is a difference for this function. Anyway, as soon as I have completed:

Homescreen > Messages > Logo_Blue.gif > Options, I have this screen:

9900.png

And, as you see, "Message Display and Actions" is the very first item. Then, inside there, scrolling down, you come to this (the "Actions" section, the second section of the entire screen):

9900-01.png

So, how do those compare to yours?

Do please keep in mind time zones...we have worldwide volunteer participants, so "morning" for you may or may not correlate to me.

Nothing beyond what is in this post...good night, and we'll pick this back up tomorrow!

Re: Bold 9900 not keeping messages

1) Thank you for the basic question haha....I log in through webmail and use Horde mail.

2) Those look the exact same except I have all 5 checked off. I got to that screen before but obviously wasn’t clear on what you were asking as that was quite straightforward.

3) Fair enough…didn’t think of that lol I am on Eastern Standard Time.

4) It ended up being a much busier weekend than I thought. Hope you had a good weekend, and thanks for all this help.

Excellent. So I interpret from that post that you are all set now and all is well.

Good luck and enjoy!
