Bold 9900, sluggish responses, battery drain & overheating!

[ Edited ]

I've been upgraded via my carrier (VM) to a Bold 9900 handset.  That was in late February and everything was going great until about 3 days ago.

I started to notice that when navigating around phone settings, menus and emails/texts, I was getting some sluggish responses.

After that started, the battery life was being eaten away and the 3rd day resulted in a rather interesting experience of picking up a phone which felt hot enough to fry eggs on!

I have looked around Google for this and there are quite a few discussions surrounding it; the vast majority pointing to the fact that there's an active program somewhere that is maxing out the processor on the phone, resulting in the battery drain and heat issue.

However, finding that program is another matter!  Is there any option or menu on the 9900 which will give me similar information to the Task Manager on Windows so I can see what's causing the problem?

The only update that I have made in a couple of months was something last night to do with BlackBerry World?  Before that point, I did have the sluggish responses but not the overheating issue...

All of my contact addresses are backed up regularly and I also have a spreadsheet of these too (going by past experiences of the backup files not working properly) so worst case scanario, I will lose no data that is important.

Any assistance will be most appreciated.

Best regards

Gavin

PS: I have already tried the usual battery pull and have also let the entire charge run out too.  This doesn't seem to rectify the issue at all.  The battery charge still seems to evapourate even when the handset is turned off.  I did have an issue similar to this on my old Curve 8520 caused by an app that was running invisibly!

Re: Bold 9900, sluggish responses, battery drain & overheating!

Hi and Welcome to the Community!

I recommend that you attempt to boot into Safe Mode:

  • KB17877 How to start a BlackBerry smartphone in Safe Mode

It may take you multiple attempts to get the ESC key sequence (press/release/hold) correct, so be patient. When successfully into Safe Mode, see what happens.

If the behavior ceases, then think carefully...what happened just before this behavior started? A new app? An update? A Theme? Something else? Think carefully as the smallest change could be causal...and attempt to undo whatever that was.

But if the behavior continues in Safe Mode, then you may need to consider more drastic actions -- WIPE, OS Reload, BBSAK Wipe/Reload, and the "Bare Bones" OS Reload Process. To prepare, you should be sure that you have a full backup to your PC...please review the Backup link in my auto-sig on this post for instructions.

You may also need the use of these tricks:

You can also use, if your device has it, the Application Resource Monitor App to perhaps give you some diagnostic information.

Good luck and let us know!

Many thanks for the reply.  This issue has certainly had me quite concerned!

I'll give the safe mode a try later tonight when I have a bit more free time and post the results.

Your links are certainly worth keeping, I'll make a note of those for future reference.

Best regards

Re: Bold 9900, sluggish responses, battery drain & overheating!

I finally had a bit of time to run my 9900 on safe mode to see what happens.

No change, after about 20mins, the back of the phone became warm again plus charge was down to literally nothing at all.  Switching it off, then back on reduced the charge to nothing at all so I plugged it into the USB port and synched it with BB's desktop software.

Well...

The phone has now been on for hmm about 40 minutes or so and is still cool to touch, there is no sluggish responses and it is slowly recharging!

Not sure what to say abut that one.  Does the BB desktop software also troubleshoot phone settings or ofter software related issues?

No.

Since Safe Mode resulted as it did, the only deduction is that the OS itself has somehow become corrupted, causign this behavior. You may want to try the tedious "Bare Bones OS Reload Procedure" to attempt to narrow down the precise causal item:

  1. Load your OS "bare bones"...if anything is optional, do not install it.
  2. If the behavior presents immediately, then try a different OS with step 1
  3. If the behavior does not immediately present, then run for as long as it takes for you to be sure that the behavior will not present.
  4. Add one thing -- no matter how tempting, just one.
  5. If the behavior does not present immediately, then again run for long enough to be sure it will not have the same problem
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until all things are loaded or the behavior presents

When the behavior presents, you know the culprit...the last thing you loaded.

If the behavior does not re-present, then you know that either step 1 or 2 cured it.

If the behavior presents no matter what, then you likely have a hardware level issue for which no amount of OS or software can cure.

Good luck and let us know!

Re: Bold 9900, sluggish responses, battery drain & overheating!

I never had that many apps in the first place, re-installed one at a time and left for a while between each install plus ran the app for a while.

No change, no overheating or sluggish response from the trackpad.

Got all 4 of my apps back and everything is pretty much back to normal (until the next time anyway).

The only thing I can possibly imagine it could have been was the BB World update?  It has caused some issues in the past with me during updates, the odd freeze maybe which is nothing too serious since I so rarely use it anyway.

I'll certainly be keeping an eye on my 9900 more closely especially during recharging - never leave it unattended anyway.

Best regards
