Hi and Welcome to the Community!
IMHO...the best practice is to not use the mobile device as the "master" data storage place. Rather, for all that can be, store the data in a desktop organizer app (e.g., Outlook), and have them synchronize to each other. Refer to this for compatibility:
If you can get your data (calendar, contacts, etc.) into a compatible PIM, then you can configure the Desktop Software to synchronize that data with your BB:
For data outside of the Organizer (e.g., pictures, etc.), you instead need to get those onto your computer, and then use Mass Storage Mode to copy them to your BB:
Further, if a desktop organizer is not your option, then RIM provides a Device Switch Wizard to migrate from another SmartPhone to a BB...but only for compatible devices. See this KB:
3) If your old device is not compatible with the wizard, then RIM further provides the ability to import from ASCII and CSV files. See this KB:
So, your choice is, IMO, to use a desktop PIM to manage your data...then choose a compatible PIM (from above). Then, get your data out of your old device and into the desktop PIM. Then, configure the BB to sync with the PIM:
BTW -- once you are up and running on your BB, a good backup regimen is needed...here's a thread about that:
Good luck and let us know!
