Can't turn on old 8830 to clear memory

I have an 8830 which I haven't used in 4+ years and I now want to recycle it.  However, I want to clear all of the memory before I send it for recycling, and I can't turn on the device.

I charged the device overnight and I see an image that looks like the battery being charged.  (Battery with lightning bolt through it.)

However, when I try to turn on the device with the power button, it won't turn on.  I've tried turning it on while still plugged into charged plugged into wall outlet, and also unplugged.

The SIM card is already removed (I must have done that when I stopped using the phone), but my understanding is that there could still be personal information stored on the device itself.

Any suggestions for how I can turn on the device and clear memory?

Re: Can't turn on old 8830 to clear memory

With it charging, after several hours, and still connected to the charging cable, remove the battery and replace to reboot. If you get the same "no battery" symbol, keep charging and try again. The on-device reserve battery is deeply drained. it may take a couple of days of the above process several times to kick it off (or on, on this case).
