Apparently I need some kind of Hotfix from Microsoft but I am afraid to install the wrong thing! Can someone please inform me what the correct Hotfix is and where to find the download

Did you get an Error message? Please post it here.
I recently installed on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit with no problem, so I know it can work.

As already asked have you tried to download and Install BlackBerry Desktop Software ? If so are you getting any error while Installing ?

I have downloaded the software, when I try to install I get the this error message:
The version of the file is not compattible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86(32-bit) or x64(64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher

Are you running the programme as an adminstrator , You must Install it as your system type , if you are running 64 bit Windows then you have to choose 64 bits while installing .
If error persists then you can try to put your PC in clean boot and then try to run the Application, you can refer to this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 . I think the problem is within your PC setting but not on BlackBerry Desktop Software.
