Computer does not recognize 9650 as drive

I have a Blackberry Bold 9650 with the latest update and it was working fine. When connected to a PC, I was able to see the phone as an external drive and was able to copy or drag/drop files from “Camera Pictures” and “Picture Library.” However, I saw only the phone memory and NOT the 2GB media card as a separate drive in Windows.

I have Desktop Manager with the latest update and it was working but rarely used.

I performed a full back up using Desktop Manager and here is the result:

  1. No longer able to see the BB Bold as an external drive.
  2. Most “Camera Pictures” and “Picture Library” files were moved to SD card.

Here’s what I did and current status:

  1. Used Desktop Manager Restore and restored “Content” so “Camera Pictures” and “Picture Library” files are back on the BB Bold.
  2. Verified USB cable is good.
  3. Powered BB Bold and PC up/down a number of times.
  4. Removed BB Bold battery.
  5. Verified Media Card Support settings (didn’t have to change). However, I unchecked Media Card Support, saved settings, re-checked Media Card Support and re-saved. Nothing happened.
  6. Verified non-readability of BB Bold as external drive on different PCs.
  7. Desktop Manager still communicates
  8. Desktop Manager shows only 16 of 227 “Camera Pictures” files and 1 of 10 “Picture Library” files on phone memory.  Device Manager does not recognize media card.
  9. When I disconnect Desktop Manager, all “Camera Pictures” and “Picture Library” files are visible on the phone.
  10. Windows Device Manager shows no errors for Blackberry or USB ports.
  11. Windows Device Manager: Blackberry Smartphone shows up under Blackberry and RIM Blackberry SD USB Device shows up in Disk drives in but neither appears in Windows Explorer.
  12. Tried the Pinstack solution and that didn’t help.
  13. Have tried numerous other suggestions but nothing works to restore BB Bold as Windows external drive.

I would appreciate help with, or clarification of, the following:

  1. How do I re-enable the 9650 so Windows can see it?
  2. Why does DM move picture files during back up? Is there a setting to prevent this?
  3. How do I make the SD card visible to Windows?

Re: Computer does not recognize 9650 as drive

Hey afleali,

Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.

Thanks for the question.

I would suggest enabling mass storage mode, this needs to be enabled if you want to access the microsd card on the PC.

Follow the steps in this KB article: www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB13564

Already did that - mass storage IS enabled.  Just can't see any mass storage files from PC or Desktop manager.  All driver status looks good.
