Connection to desktop software

I downloaded blackberry desktop software a few weeks ago. It worked once, but on attempting to re connect again last Saturday 4th Feb, the device and the desktop though connected physically by a cable, did not complete the connection. A  small green circle appeared with the message connecting..., but the process never ended. What can I do?
