Curve 8520 Acting cranky!

My Blackberry Curve 8520 doesnt have the latest OS 5 supported for the device and i can get it downloaded either from the web. My app world isnt installed and it is dead difficult to get it downloaded. I know for sure that I dont have a BB plan activated but i suppose i can download the apps on my laptop and via the desktop manager software can transfer them to my phone. Please advise.
