I got a new bb, connected my bbm and then I updated the software to the latest version. After which I cannot log into my bbm at all. Get stuck at the blue screen. please advice

First can you confirm , if you're able to use BBM before updating your device software ?
Do you have a BlackBerry Data Plan / BIS from your Carrier or Network Service Provider ?

So you already have BIS in your account from your Mobile network provider , Right !
On your Homescreen Go to Manage Connection can you turn off your wifi and try to use it over your Mobile network . Can you try it that way .

First reboot your device by removing the battery while your device is Powered On , wait for a min. then reinsert it back . After reboot On your Homescreen Go to Manage Connection > Service Status > BlackBerry Internet Services = what is the status now ?
