The BB Desktop Manager somehow doesn't work for me. I've tried this many times but as soon as cradle the device with the USB connector, for a second the communication icon appears on the device screen and then finally it displays a windows debug error "Blackberry Desktop Manager has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" and the applications exit.
Next time when i start Desktop Manager it shows status as Disconnected, (though I can see the phone-computer connection status on the main screen of the devices sometime and sometime just the battery indicated charging). I've restarted PC, reinstalled the application many times but no use.
The version of Desktop Manager i use is 18.104.22.168 on Windows XP and I'm using Blackberry Bold. I tried using 4.7 also.
P.S. : This worked for me on the first day of my new BB

Try uninstalling the Desktop Manager and install it again from this link

Well in fact i was installing the softwares downloaded from the same site. Anyway the problem is resolved now. What i did different this time is:
1. Reinstall the USB and modem drivers
2. Install Desktop Manager to a different path, that te default one.
And any one of the above fixed it. I'm happy it works :-)
