Desktop Manager asking for Device Manager

When I try to startup my desktop manager, I get the following message:

"The Application Loader Wizard requires the BlackBerry Device Manager to be installed.  Please contact customer support."

But it seems the Device Manager is installed and functioning properly.  It is also odd that the Desktop Manager window title says "Connected - BlackBerry Desktop Manager"

Then another box pops up with the title, 'Task in progress' and it shows the message:

"Checking for device application updates.  Please wait..."

I can not do anything while it is checking for updates and hitting the Cancel button does nothing.  I end up having to close the desktop manager program via windows task manager.

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing with the supplied CD and by downloading the latest desktop manager software from the web.  I am running Vista Home Premium 64.  Anyone that can point me in the right direction to get my BB working properly on this computer?  (It works fine on my XP computer)

Re: Desktop Manager asking for Device Manager

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!

Since there seems to be so much going on, I suggest the following steps (insert plenty of reboots of your PC...not just restarts, but full power down reboots). Also, it is advised that you be logged into the PC on an account with full admin rights. Further, under Vista, use the "Run As Administrator" option for everything.

1) Remove your device OS update package from your PC (add/remove programs)

2) Cleanly uninstall the RIM DTM software:

  • KB02206 How to perform a clean uninstall of BlackBerry Desktop Software

3) Get a fresh download of the RIM DTM software:

  • Choose the version that is newest and (if applicable) compatible with your PIM (if you are synchornizing via USB):
  • KB12268 Applications supported by BlackBerry Desktop Manager for synchronization

4) Download (to your PC) a fresh copy of your device OS package from your carrier:

5) Install DTM to your PC

6) Install (also to your PC), the device OS package

7) Start whatever you were attempting over again.

Hopefully that will get things going again.

Good luck and let us know!

[ Edited ]

Edit:  I forgot to start the DTM running as administrator.  Now it isn't connecting to my Blackberry.  Trying to download and install the updates.

I got the same message as before when I didn't run as admin.

Re: Desktop Manager asking for Device Manager

Hmmm..OK...here is the list of troubleshooting atricles...hopefully something will be useful:

http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Desktop-Software/Tips-for-getting-BlackBerry-Deskt...
KB02640 Troubleshooting USB connections
KB15486 Top 10 BlackBerry smartphone and BlackBerry Desktop Manager troubleshooting tips
KB11439 BlackBerry Desktop Software does not detect the BlackBerry smartphone when it is connected
KB00019 No PIN displayed in BlackBerry Desktop Redirector
KB10938 "USB charging current is insufficient" appears on the BlackBerry smartphone
KB01451 How to turn on advanced synchronization logging if a wired synchronization fails

Also, check that you are using only root USB ports...no hubs (sometimes the front-side ports are hubs...use a rear USB port). And make sure to try disabling USB power management in your system configuration (Device Manager).

Apologies in advance if this is redundant -- there's no way to be sure if you've already seen and tried these.

Hopefully something there is helpful!

Cheers!

Re: Desktop Manager asking for Device Manager

It seems the device OS didn't install properly (or at all?)  that seems to be what was causing the problem, coupled with not running DTM as the admin.  Looks like things are working properly now.  Thanks!

Re: Desktop Manager asking for Device Manager

Are there ANY other solutions to this problem?

I have been uninstalling, deleting registries, and reinstalling for the last 24hrs. This is really upsetting that the "solution" has not worked at all for me.
