Can anyone explain why when using Desktop Software when backing up my files it will go through the motions until it gets to Backing Up SmartCard options 1 of 1, it will freeze and not go any further. If anyone has a solution to this problem, please let me know ASAP. I can't backup my data at all.

Did you find a fix? I have been having this problem with my 9810 since I got it. It is a bug in the 'social feeds' app. there are 2 things you can do,
1) delete the social feeds from your handset if you don't use it
2) set the DM to perform a 'custom back up' put a tick next to all the items apart from social app and smart card, it is not hanging on the smart card back up but the social feeds is next alphabetically.
To perform step 2 I had to connect my BB and cancel the back up BEFORE it reached the hanging point.
It's worked for me so I'm a happy user again! Can't take the credit though for this work around, see this link if you have any further problems.
